Winifred Lutz at Kansas City Art Institute

The KCAI Crossroads Gallery: Center for Contemporary Practice in partnership with the college’s Current Perspectives Lecture Series is pleased to present Nor Boat Nor Fish No River/By the Missouri. The installation is the outcome of a detailed workshop led by artist, Winifred Lutz. The content and forms presented come from Lutz’s interest and research about the Missouri River system, its history, and ecology. Her engagement with KCAI Fiber and Painting courses resulted in the fabrication of dozens of forms included in this site-specific gallery installation. The small gallery presents a curated selection of process samples, methodologies, and prototypes related to her papermaking practice and this project. This project was initiated by KCAI faculty members Marie Bannerot McInerney and Corey Antis.

Widely known for her site-integrated installation sculpture, Winifred Lutz has created major installations and permanent public works in the United States and Europe. Her outdoor installations are known for their remarkable sensitivity to the site, for how they underscore the vegetative and social processes that determine the discrete history of a place. She has traveled to study gardens in Japan, the Sinai Peninsula, and Scotland. Past venues for her installations have included the Brooklyn Museum, the Brooklyn Bridge Anchorage, the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania, the Contemporary Arts Center Cincinnati, and the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art.

Known for the work she has done over the past 35 years, Winifred Lutz is a primary innovator in the field of hand papermaking as an art form. Her travel in Japan and Korea to observe papermaking methods and tools has given her a perspective on the craft that has allowed her to combine European and Asian techniques to create unusual hybrid processes. She has lectured nationally and internationally on her unique paper casting methods. Her scholarly explorations of paper techniques have been widely published. Winifred Lutz’s work is the recipient of many awards, including an NEA Visual Artist Fellowship, the PEW Fellowship in the Arts, a PA Council on the Arts Visual Artist’s Fellowship, and an NYC Creative Time Project Grant. In 2012, she received the International Sculpture Center’s Educator Award. Her work is represented in museum and private collections nationally. She lives and works in Pennsylvania. Formerly Laura H. Carnell Professor of Sculpture at Tyler School of Art of Temple University, she is now Professor Emerita.
