Paper Dolls: An Exhibition by Katy DeMent and Guest Artist Sylvia Kay

Paper Dolls: Handmade Paper Clothing & Unique Silver Jewelry
Katy DeMent & Guest Artist Sylvia Kay

Opening Reception: Saturday, February 14, 5-8 pm till 2/28 by appointment

Decatur, GA – Sycamore Place Gallery is proud to present “Paper Dolls: Handmade paper clothing & unique silver jewelry” featuring the work of paper maker Katy DeMent.

Katy DeMent is a fiber artist based with a focus on handmade papers for over 30 years. She grew up in North Carolina under a sewing machine, surrounded by quilting great grandmothers, gardening great aunts, and mom. When mom went back to work she lost her personal seamstress.
That is when she began altering her family’s vintage clothes, raiding closets for vintage materials. Influenced by her longtime relationship with fabrics and fibers, stitchery, is always cropping up as decorative and functional element in this body of work.  Over the years DeMent's handmade paper artworks have shifted from images of un-wearable handmade paper,  clotheslines and vintage clothing cast in to papers-  to wearable paper fantasies and curious little paper covered  articulated  sculptures all of which will be on display for both, amusement and purchase.

Also an active teaching artist, DeMent has presented residencies through Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, ArtsPath, Gateway to the Arts, Young Audiences of New York, and the Pittsburgh Center for Creative Reuse. Her work is found in galleries and museums worldwide and has been featured on HGTV’s “Crafters Coast to Coast”.

Special guest and jewelry maker Sylvia Kay will have her jewelry work on display and for sale during the opening reception.

Sylvia Kay’s approach to jewelry making is based on simplicity and beauty. She creates wearable organic silver jewelry. She uses contemporary and minimalist aesthetics to create wearable art that is a strong statement with both, everyday wardrobe as well as on special occasions. She finds her inspiration in the organic flow and in the purity of nature. Her work is hand fabricated using sterling and fine silver, semi-precious gemstones, copper, brass and other materials. Creating every piece from sheet and wire, she uses traditional silversmithing techniques to form each piece, enjoying the challenge of hand fabrication of unique pieces.

The Artist’s Reception on February 14th will be complemented with a “make your own darn valentine” station (because who loves and knows you better?) and an array of chocolate delights.

The exhibit will be supported with two age-appropriate workshops at Sycamore Place Gallery:

3 Day Paper Dolls Camp, Feb, 17-19, 2015
Students age 5-15 will work with papermaking artist Katy DeMent to create life-size articulated ephemeral puppets and handmade paper collage. Student works may be influenced by sculptor Marisol* as well as DeMent’s handmade paper works that will be on display concurrently.
