Upcoming at Women's Studio Workshop

For more details on these and other workshops visit: wsworkshop.org/summer-art-institute/

Instructor: Mary Hark
We’ve Got the Blues: Indigo Dyeing for Paper & Cloth
Dates: August 20 - 24
Studio: Papermaking
Class limit: 6
Tuition: $750 members / $800 non-members
Lab fee: $60

Class description:
Participants will be immersed in studio production, making use of this powerful and historic color on handmade paper and a variety of textiles. Experienced dyers are encouraged to bring works-in-progress and ideas for new projects. Beginners will be introduced to the process of papermaking with fibers that are appropriate for this immersion dye process—such as Asian fibers, flax, abaca, and linen cloth—as well as shibori resist dye techniques. Each participant will be supported and encouraged as they use these processes and materials to expand their creative practice with the breadth of possibility offered by the indigo vat.

Studio work will be complemented by discussion of the historic and contemporary use of indigo; informal critiques of works-in-progress; and technical information for papermaking and dyeing in home studios and classrooms. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of what this color can mean, a portfolio of beautiful samples of indigo blue on cloth and handmade paper, completed work, and the information necessary to continue on this path. This will be an intensive week of indigo dyeing for all levels of experience.

Instructor: Tana Kellner and Laura Moriarty
Handmade Paper and Encaustic
Dates: August 13 - 17
Studio: Papermaking and R&F
Class limit: 6
Tuition: $750 members / $800 non-members
Lab fee: $60

Join WSW in collaboration with R&F Handmade Paints in Kingston as we create contemporary waxed handmade paper works. During the first two and a half days, participants will work with Tana in WSW’s papermaking studio, using cotton, abaca, flax, and ArtFarm fibers. Once we master the basics, we’ll investigate how to best use the special qualities of each fiber, creating collages by layering, embedding, stenciling, pulp painting, and embossing.

After lunch on Wednesday, we will travel to R&F Handmade Paints, where our handmade paper will be just the starting point. After Laura leads an introduction to basic encaustic techniques, students will create deeply layered collages by working directly on the handmade papers or mounting the handmade sheets on panels. Techniques will include saturating, bending, burnishing, dipping, staining, transferring, drawing, and carving.

Instructor: Tatiana Ginsberg
Layering Paper: Blow-outs, Pulp-Painting, Embedding, and Watermarked Images
Dates: July 23-27
Studio: Paper
Class limit: 6
Tuition: $750 members / $800 non-members
Lab fee: $100

Class description:
Everyone is familiar with drawing on paper, but in this class we will make images IN paper. By building images in the wet sheets, participants will achieve a wide range of effects only possible in the papermaking process. Layering paper on paper in the wet stages opens up new possibilities for getting color, form, and imagery into and onto our paper as we make it.

This is a great class for printmakers or anyone who enjoys making marks through drawing, painting, or collage. No prior papermaking experience is necessary, just a willingness to experiment.

Tuition: $750 members / $800 non-members
Lab fee: $135
(Lab fee includes darkroom chemistry and photographic emulsion)

Class description:
Artists will rediscover the excitement of working in the photographic darkroom and the pleasures of making paper by hand. We’ll combine these two tactile processes to create painterly photographic prints on handmade paper. The first two days will be spent making paper from various fibers, suitable for photographic purposes. We’ll explore making standard and shaped paper, embedding, and pulp painting all in preparation for the darkroom. Working with traditional photographic negatives (up to 4” x 5”) or making new digital negatives, we’ll spend the rest of the week learning to size and coat the paper before proceeding to print in the darkroom. No previous experience is necessary.

Instructor: Sarah Rose Lejeune
Paper Memory
Dates: July 2 - 6
Studio: Papermaking
Class limit: 6
Tuition: $750 members / $800 non-members
Lab fee: $75

Class description:
In this course, we will think through the ways that handmade paper, through its material properties, can hold human imprint. Students will learn to process fibers like abaca and flax with a focus on creating high shrinkage, translucent consistencies suitable for embedding and holding sculptural forms. We will also explore cotton’s potential for low relief casting and embossing. Using traditional and experimental papermaking techniques as a foundation, the class will discuss the relationship between nostalgia and contemporary craft. Students will become comfortable with all aspects of the paper studio, from processing fiber to pulling and drying Western formation sheets, specifically gaining skills with tools like the Reina beater, hydraulic press and vacuum table. This class is open to all skill levels.

Confluence: Twelve Collaborations - Exhibition at Morgan Conservatory

Exoskeleton by Pam McKee and Kyle Holland
This unique exhibition pairs twelve highly accomplished American papermakers with printmakers, calligraphers, and surface designers of their choosing to generate collaborative pieces that range from prints to books and every medium in between, allowing these pairings to foster the production of unique art forms borne out of the creative efforts of both artists.

“For over two thousand years, handmade paper has been used primarily as a substrate for the transmission of information in text form, for visual images, and for furniture,” said Tom Balbo, Artistic Director of the Morgan Conservatory. “This show speaks to the nature of handmade paper and its ability to be an art form by highlighting multiple techniques and traditions as well as variances of scale.” Balbo added, “Each pairing had the challenge of incorporating both the papermaker’s and the artist’s individual sense of the craft to create inventive works that best demonstrate a melding of the two minds. We hope the exhibition showcases many, if not all, forms that handmade paper can take in this digital age, where the craft of papermaking is having a genuine resurgence.”

Confluence: Twelve Collaborations opens Friday, August 12th through Friday, September 16th at the Morgan – 1754 E. 47th St., Cleveland, OH 44103. The opening night reception starts at 6:30 p.m. For additional viewing hours and information visit morganconservatory.org.

ABOUT PROCESS: Leandra Spangler...

Succulent

Deeply rooted in the Midwest, my world is rolling hills, woodlands, creeks, and fields where beauty is found within arm’s reach. My inspiration comes from the rich tones, textures and forms of the natural world. Although I admire and appreciate the garden in its entirety, I treasure the seedpod and pebble found on the path. In the same way, I enjoy creating sculptural forms, but find the tactile surface of highly textured handmade paper most gratifying.
