Earth | Paper | Sky - Late Night Pecha Kucha Power Session, by Catherine Nash

Late Night Pecha Kucha Power Session, by Catherine Nash

Jay Fox and Kerri Cushman hosted a power talk by 6 dynamic Friends on Saturday night. Pecha Kucha is a high speed way of covering a lot of informational ground without excess time to deviate: each presenter was allowed 20 slides with an auto image sequencing every 20 seconds...a total of about 6 minutes. It was high energy and lots of fun!

I was so grateful for my scholarship this year to attend the Santa Fe meeting - more often than not I cannot attend and I sit at home chomping at the bit as I wait for some published news about the amazing presentations and demos at the FDH annual meetings. I hope you will placate me as I have thoroughly written about each presenter - I’m so happy to report on these inspirational talks and I hope this satisfies your curiosity~

Helen Hiebert’s theme was “A Papermaker’s Challenge” and she outlined her creatively diverse way of making a living from papermaking. Hiebert is a talented artist who often collaborates with community in her installations such as Mother Tree and has permanent works such as The Wish installed in a library in Thornton, Colorado. She recently exhibited The Secret Life of Paper: 25 years of Works in Paper, a retrospective exhibition at the Kalamazoo Book Arts Center (KBAC) and Western Michigan University in April 2016.

While these installations and artworks are not necessarily money makers, they come straight from the heart and offer her enrichment and connections in a deep and meaningful way. Hiebert also creates artist books which offer her a steady income stream by sales through her own website and artist book sellers such as Vamp & Tramp. She is an educator and a prolific author, having published such classics as The Papermaker’s Companion and Papermaking with Garden Plants and videos such as The Papermaker’s Studio Guide and Water Paper Time.

Concerned About Travel Costs to Banff? Here's Why You Shouldn't Be

Fun Fact! Travel and accommodation costs for Banff are on average $300 less expensive than last year's San Francisco conference! That's like getting 100 yards of pellon at $3 per yard and enjoying a paper-filled weekend in the Alberta Rockies.

  • Average roundtrip flights to Calgary roughly:
    • from Chicago $418
    • from New York City $509
    • from Los Angeles $386
  • Travel from Airport to Banff Centre is roughly $80 round trip.
  • Lodging is roughly $127.00 USD a night American (+$11 a night for each additional person).

Announcing David Carruthers as the 2015 Keynote Speaker at Paper Points North

The Friends of Dard Hunter are honored and excited to welcome David Carruthers as the Keynote Speaker at Paper Points North, the 2015 Annual Meeting. David is the owner and founder of La Papeterie Saint-Armand

David opened Saint-Armand is 1979, after leaving his job at the Pulp & Paper Association of Canada because he had had enough of office work. Papermaking has been in the Carruthers family for generations. David’s grand-father George Carruthers was owner of the Interlake Paper Mill, in Ontario. He also wrote the book “Papermaking” which traces the history of 100 years of papermaking in Canada up to 1905. David’s father was a paper salesman with the family firm and he had a gift for selling ‘remainders’ by the carload. The Papeterie Saint-Armand is located in Montreal’s historic South West Borough and provides handmade paper, machine-made paper, and sanded paper to a variety of clients locally, nationally and internationally. Saint-Armand is a longstanding pillar within Montreal’s community of small/medium manufacturers, and David’s commitment and interest in the local business community is as strong as ever.

WATERMARKS CONFERENCE ~ Part II: Aimee Lee

Wedding Chamber Pot

Thanks to Pinterest and my PAPER PAPER PAPER board there, I learned about Korean paper weaving from other papermakers via the internet before going to the conference. Which is where I first happened upon Aimee Lee's website. Aimee is a visual artist and papermaker who is working to revive the ancient techniques of Korean papermaking. So you can imagine my delight at learning she would be doing one of the workshops this year at the Morgan Conservatory: "Useful Miracles: The Practice of Noyeokgae Korean Paper Weaving."

Annual Meeting Information Available Online

Shannon Brock, Vice President of Publicity and Outreach for the Friends of Dard Hunter sent along a note to let everyone know that our annual conference is fast approaching. "We are thrilled to announce that the 2009 Friends of Dard Hunter Conference Information is now launched on our website."

Remember to refresh your screen on each page to receive the most recent information. All of the forms are downloadable PDF files, AND they are interactive. You may complete them in Adobe Acrobat and submit them directly online if you so desire. The one challenge is that when you complete your registration form and submit it online to our treasurer, Cecile Webster, you MUST remember your total. Then, click on the Buy Now button on the Annual Meeting page to pay with your credit card via PayPal. It is a single field that will ask you for the total amount. Not exactly seamless, but we're still learning.

The one piece of information that is yet to be posted is the Member's Exhibition. We are finalizing the information and I hope to have it posted by next weekend.

If you have never attended one of our conferences this would be a good place to start! Hope to meet many of you in Atlanta!

Happy Papermaking!
