Postcard Project at Mountain House Press ~ Chillicothe

You many have noticed a very special postcard arrive in your mailbox recently. Sent to you has a membership benefit, and a way to keep in touch, this was printed on an iron handpress by Dard Hunter III, Johan Solberg, and Radha Pandey at the Mountain House Press, Chillicothe, Ohio.

The paper used was made ca. 1928-1933 by Dard Hunter himself. Lime Rock Mill was Dard Hunter's attempt at commercial high quality papermaking, and his first batch came out several months after the stock market crashed. Dard Hunter made enough paper at Lime Rock, Connecticut to be the source for the paper for his own books...and apparently our postcards! Darn! That's a lotta paper! (Source: dardhunter.com)

Enjoy this short story from Radha below!

We arrived in Chillicothe for the 4th of July weekend all set to spend the weekend printing the FDH annual postcard at the Mountain House press with Dard Hunter III.

Dard gave us a tour of his grandfather’s beautiful home and grounds. We were absolutely in awe of the library, and the precious first editions of several hand printed books written by Dard Hunter. I hadn’t realized how many books had in face been written about papermaking in different parts of the world.

We spent the first day looking through galleys of set type and ornaments trying to decide what to use for the postcards. There were too many choices, and many familiar illustrations that we had seen in books about papermaking. We decided to print three postcards. One using a plate illustrating early watermarks, and the other two using found blocks and ornaments that were designed and hand cast by Dard Hunter II.

The paper we decided to use for the postcards was made at Lime Rock by Dard Hunter, and was generously donated by Dard Hunter III for this annual mailing.

Neither Dard nor us, had printed on the iron handpress before. It was a challenge trying to get the inking and impression right. The handpress had hanging on it, a hat given to Dard Hunter by Mahatma Gandhi, which kept us company through the night as we printed.

Postcard Project Preview!

In just a week or two, members of the Friends of Dard Hunter will be receiving something special in the mail. As part of an effort to keep in touch, and a membership benefit, members will receive a letterpress printed, handmade paper postcard. This postcard project is part of Bull & Branch Press, an expanded idea of Bull & Branch which includes real-life, printed ephemera, in addition to a spring issue newsletter.

Paper Connection International made a generous donation of handmade papers for this project. Paper Connection is known for carrying superior fine art and specialty papers made by skilled crafts people in the East. Be sure to check out their webshop and follow Paper Connection on Facebook! From the Paper Connection website:
Lauren Pearlman Sugita founded Paper Connection International in 1995 with the commitment of ensuring the art of handmade, traditional Japanese paper (washi) and handmade paper in general was preserved into the future. Through import, distribution, and education, Paper Connection has not only been an essential source of washi(Japanese paper), but over the years, Paper Connection has become known for its comprehensive collection of handmade papers from all over the world.

The papers used for these postcards include:

Hakudoshi Koba-  This is a Japanese 2-ply paper made in Kochi Prefecture, Japan.  Highly textured, this paper is typically used as wallpaper and mostly made with sulphite (wood pulp) with sand and bark embedded in top layer.

Kin Unryu Mint HW  This is multi-ply paper made in Anhui Province, China, sprinkled with gold flakes. Made from blue sandal wood and other bast fibers.

Lokta single-color Dyed and embedded with Sawdust waste.   Lokta papers come from Nepal and are made from lokta fiber (a cousin of gampi fiber).

Card Stock Koume on Grey, Coconut and Pink  This is a Japanese lace, rayon paper with a watermark plum blossom (koume) pattern, laminated to cardstock, also made in Kochi, Japan.

The International Printing Museum in Carson, CA was also a generous sponsor for this postcard. The International Printing Museum is a public non-profit organization and was founded in 1988 by David Jacobson and Ernest A. Lindner and features The Lindner Collection of Antique Printing Machinery. Keep scrolling for photos from Colin Browne, Friends of Dard Hunter VP of Publicity & Outreach making the postcards!

The postcard front features Dard Hunter's bull and branch watermark/pressmark, and a Roycroft design from the frontispiece of "The Boy from Missouri Valley" by Elbert Hubbard.

Also, look for some very cool vintage stamps on your postcard from Coast Philatelics!

Bull & Branch Spring Issue: Call for Papers

Bull & Branch Spring Issue: Call for Papers

A New Crop of Community Papermaking Studios

From its roots, the ancient craft of papermaking has evolved over centuries, encompassing a broad range of forms along the way. Papermaking has been a utilitarian hand-craft, an industrialized process, and expressive art form. The question is: what form is papermaking taking today? This issue of the Bull & Branch highlights an emerging crop of small-scale, community-oriented papermaking studios. Just as Dard Hunter brought a renaissance in hand papermaking, these groups are sharing hand papermaking in a new way: as creative practice that engages, connects and inspires those within their local communities.

Send in your written contributions! Articles, essays, and interviews related to this topic are all welcome. Please email editor@friendsofdardhunter.org to get started. Deadline for articles: March 19th, 2015.

Paper on the Press: 2014 Conference Overview

Dear Friends,

It was wonderful to see many of you in the beautiful city of San Francisco this past October at our Annual Meeting, Paper on the Press. It was exciting to continue the tradition of collaborating with an allied organization, American Printing History Association (APHA), to bring together a program full of multi-faceted exhibitions, tours, and presentations. We gained a great deal from exchanging traditions and ideas with the members of APHA, and I am proud that their members had the opportunity to learn so much about paper and its history from the Friends.
