News from Marjorie A. Alexander...

"The Web" by Marjorie Alexander

The International Exhibition of Contemporary Textile Art “Miniartextil” will be exhibiting a paper sculpture by Marjorie at the prestigious Villa Olmo in Como, Italy from October 6, 2012 to November 18, 2012.  In 2013 the exhibit will travel to Paris, France, and Venice, Italy.  The exhibit of 54 pieces was chosen from over 350 entries from 46 different countries.

Marjorie’s work, “The Web,” is her interpretation of the theme of the exhibition “Agora,” a Greek word that indicates the heart of the polis, where people meet to exchange and compare ideas.   Today, the Internet Web is the site where people exchange different experiences and interpretations of their social and business life.

Not only is the form of Marjorie’s work symbolic of the modern Agora, but the fibers she used, a web-like bleached fiber she discovered in South Korea, but made in the Philippines from the pineapple plant (Ananas comosus), and another fiber (Brooussonetia papyrifera) from Korea, reflect the global scope of the interchange now possible with the Internet.
